Last evening, the Ward 1 meeting was held at City Hall. Citizens were eager to discuss the recent incidents in their neighborhood; the armed robbery on Sonora Avenue and the residential burglary on Pine Avenue. I felt it was important for the residents to know the facts of both incidents and to be aware of what the Police Department is doing in response, as well as, what the citizens can do to help themselves.
We have increased our concentration of neighborhood patrols. We have established an Overtime Detail, where officers will target areas for increased police presence. Our officers are aware of the importance of protecting the community, and they will continue to give their best effort.
As a citizen, you can help by locking your car and not leaving valuables inside the car. Lighting your property is helpful. Many neighbors talked about purchasing various lighting systems for their homes. Know your neighbors. When you leave town, let the neighbors know you will be gone and for how long. Give them your contact information. If they see someone on your property, encourage them to call the police.
Use this opportunity to educate your kids about what to do if they are confronted by someone they do not know or if they see someone on your property when you are not in the house.
Be observant. Be a good witness. Please call us when you see or hear suspicious activity. We are amazed when people tell us they don’t call because they don’t want to bother us. Call us. We want to be bothered. We will check it out. It’s what we do.
