How many times do we sit at a stoplight, and when it turns green, we take off, without bothering to see if someone is crossing the street? I see that happen at this crosswalk on Brentwood Blvd. at Eulalie Ave quite often. Pedestrians waiting to cross always have the right of way on a green light. Sure you might have to wait a few seconds. Yeah, the guy behind you may honk. The safety of the person(s) crossing is most important.
This crosswalk on Strassner Dr leads pedestrians from Memorial Park back and forth from the YMCA parking lot. It is popular with walkers in the area. Lately, the kids attending camp at the YMCA have used this crosswalk during weekdays. Please drive safely in this area, and be mindful when someone is waiting to cross. As you can see, there is a visible sign indicating the crosswalk. Lets all be aware of these crosswalks in our neighborhood and respect the rights of those who wish to cross. Be careful out there!
There are two reasons why driver’s get tickets. They are the same two reasons why driver’s are involved in traffic accidents.
1. You are in a hurry. 2. You are not paying attention.
It is really that simple. We are always late for something. We have seventeen things going on inside of our car. Yesterday I saw a guy turning from Brentwood Blvd to Manchester Rd. He was taking a sip from his coffee with one hand, and holding his cell phone to his ear with the other. Did he have a third hand steering the car?
Everyone in Brentwood has seen a speed limit sign like the one shown above, but do we really pay attention to the sign. Why is the speed limit 20 mph on our residential streets? Because that is a safe speed. It allows us to back out of our driveways safely and to play with our kids without fear of harm. We are all responsible for the safety of our streets in Brentwood. Let’s take our time, and pay attention. Be safe out there!
